Storm Duty Prep Guide
Sep 09, 2018

We know you've probably heard enough about Hurricane Florence already. However, we want to give you some "tips from our senior members" on what you need to survive storm duty at the fire house.

***Everyone is reminded to check your city email regularly for updates on the department plan- this is NOT an official notification of storm duty, just a friendly remember for our newer members on how to prepare, IN CASE storm duty is activated***

  • Food for 3 days, at least (especially if you're on specific diet or eating trend) - have food that doesn't need to be cooked or heated
  • Small personal cooler to take on the trucks with you
  • Towels
  • Socks
  • Boots, rain gear, fishing/hunting gear to keep you dry (remember the city only has about 20 wadders in different sizes)
  • Fresh uniforms (not a pile of laundry in your locker)
  • Water bottles
  • Flashlights/battery chargers
  • Bedding for cots or a sleeping bag (in case they double up crews at the station)
  • Board games, books, etc (in case we go to 12 hour shifts for rest period)
  • ***Parking POV's - Consider carpooling to work or having your crews park in the garages or "higher ground" and carpooling to the station, especially if you work in an area known to flood.
